Ever seen a windshield crack like this?

Pardon the dirty windshield.

This happened last year in the Yukon on my way home from Alaska.

I actually saw the rock come off the tire of a truck going the opposite direction. The impact was so loud I thought the rock had hit the fiberglass penthouse and made a hole in it. When I put the top up, I was greatly relieved to find the top was intact. It wasn't until 2-3 days later that I noticed the windshield. I have never seen or heard of circular cracks like this:

These cracks have not changed in the year since the impact, and they are well out of my line of vision so I never thought to change the windshield. In fact, I kind of like the looks of it. and it is a trophy from a memorable vacation.

Mike

Re: Ever seen a windshield crack like this?

Yup, I've seen a crack like that before. Mine looked almost the same. It happened to me when a logging truck (unloaded) Went flying by me on a gravel road and launched a lobbing 2" rock into my windshield. It hit the drivers side 1/2 way up and 6" from the edge. On the outside of the windshield the center was powdered glass and the hole was almost all the way through. It was a great way to wake up if one was tired. I don't want that to happen again.
Cheers
Darryl

Me too. From a small stone. Only two concentric circles though.

Mine is concentric but very small...maybe just over 1/2". Had a typical glass rerpair done and so far so good. Problem is it's right in my line of site and kind of bugs me.

Re: Ever seen a windshield crack like this?

Pffft-----I've seen worse! Being in the big truck glass biz occasionally even I run across something with a high WTF quotient:

Inside:

Mind you this was from a large bird---I assumed pterodactyl or dragon---turns out it was a wild turkey flying out of a roadside ditch straight into the right side of the single piece windshield. I've seen a few bad hits before but nothing to this level.

Driver was uninjured but understandably shaken up a bit---something like that happen at 65 MPH with full loaded truck would do that. Offending bird never seen again, cleaning up glass bits took longer than replacing the windshield.

The break shown in Mike's OP are typical of a large object typically moving "slowly" as it strikes the glass. While I'd expect that type of break more in the middle of the windshield glass breakage doesn't always follow any real pattern.

Chances are if those cracks have not yet traveled across or down the glass by now they'll be okay until the windshield is changed. As is there's no danger to front seat passengers, whether its changed is a matter of personal preference.

Glad no one was injured in your mishap Mike!
