Locking open tire carrier E-350

Any ideas of pinning the Aluminess tire carrier in the open position? We cook out of the back of the van and I'd like to be able to pin the tire carrier open so it doesn't 1) Break out the tail light and 2) smash into me while I'm actively cooking at a hot stove.

Looks like I could drill a 1/4" hole through the lower hinge arm and into the base plate and insert a pin. I believe there will be just enough room so I don't interfere with the weld holding the arm to the base plate. However, as you know, it wasn't cheap, so I wouldn't mind alternate suggestions!

Thanks!

Here's the solution from Aluminess (see Pin Lock kit), but no reason you couldn't do something like this on you own if you have the time.

Thanks. I should have mentioned I don’t have their bumper, but only the stock smooth (non-step) bumper, so I don’t really have any surface area to work with.

I emailed Aluminess and they suggested a bungee cord to the fender well...
I guess that would solve one of my problems, but honestly I’m disappointed that such an expensive item is clearly lacking a simple feature.

I guess I’ll have to drill it and take my chances. (Or maybe take the Aluminess suggestion to the next level and use a pair of vice grips to hold it open.)

My tire carrier has a locking pin built in. I bought it used several years ago so I don't think its a new feature. Did they not have them for their early builds?

It’s brand new. That is why I’m shocked it doesn’t have that “feature”. Why isn’t it designed in?
Crazy.

Thats weird. I'll try to take a pic of mine when I get home and post it so you can at least see what it looks like.

Here is a pic of my tire carrier. When you open the carrier, the two holes align and you move the pin to the aligned holes.

Well that's handy! Mine sure doesn't have that, but I got it used, so who knows how old it is.

Thanks. That’s sort of what I’m thinking.
It’s so weird they don’t do that currently.
