Paint failure on GMC Savanna hood

I have searched this forum to no avail. A general search yields a lot of rants on GMC/Chevy forums but no useful information. This is a well known problem with GMC/Chevy Summit White cargo vans.
What have GMC/Chevy van owners here done to refinish their hoods?
I was just touching up some small rock chips when I noticed a large blister.
My hood has a deflector which has probably saved me a lot of damage up until now.
It's rattle can touch up for the moment but that doesn't seem a preminant solution. Bedliner might be the ticket. I am open for suggestion on this subject.

I would think any proper automotive paint or coating would work. Fortunately for me I haven’t had this problem, yet anyway. If it does, I may go the bed liner route. Does seem like the gray primer is solid though.

Bedliner or vinyl wrap would be my choice. I had a chevy van and the paint was peeling in a bunch of spots.

Agree, bedliner/raptor liner or vinyl wrap are all good ways to go. Mines had a vinyl wrap on it since about 5K miles. I'll be changing it out next spring as its got a couple dings in it.

Paint peel like this is likely attributed to the water-based primer system. I suspect you would want to sand and repaint.

As far as I know there is no cure for the peeling paint on Chevrolets they have had this problem for almost two decades on and off.
Fords suffer from mechanical problems, Chevy all the paint peels off the damn things either way it's thousands of dollars...
On a van it's probably about $6-8,000 to paint one fix the problem.
Unless they've come out with some form of intermediate barrier as far as I know has to be stripped down to the bare metal primed and then painted with a compatible finish.
If it's just your hood you're in luck just take a body shop and have them do it..

most used cargo vans shops respray them to make them look spiffy and then within a year or so that starts peeling.... If you're looking for a temporary solution just call up a local cargo van reseller ask him who they're spray company is... Good luck.

I had a '97 E250 in the medium blue metallic paint, one of the years Ford used the water-based primer. it was slick as snot on a door knob, HARD as nails and nothing would stick to it for any length of time.

With the darker blue body and the gray-white primer showing through it looked like a Pinto pony. Roof was so rusted (surface) I had a friend sand it smooth and apply a bedliner material. The body was left untreated, looked like less of a crook magnet that way.

If I were doing just the hood a decent sanding job to feather the paint edge and having it wrapped, either DIY or professionally. You could also use a tintable bedliner material like Monstaliner and adjust the finished texture to suit you desires, anything from smoothish to gnarly like large stones were encapsulated in the finish.

Hear you there! I had a 1988 S10 Blazer that I bought new and put over 320,000 miles on it. Still mechanically sound when I sold it but the paint was mostly gone from the hood and the roof.
