Rear end ratios

I have a 2005 E350 with V10. I've installed the Action Van lift with 285 tires. Currently the rear end is a 3.73. I also purchased the SCT programmer and with changing the shift points and a little extra power things seem OK.

My towables are: 20' weekend warrior and a 23' wakeboard boat, about 4,000lb each.

My question is for those with similar vans, what ratio are you running and do you wish you went with something else? If I'm not mistaken going from a 3.73 to 4.10 only changes rpm by 200 or so, is this correct?

Thanks for any input!

Re: Rear end ratios

Going from 3.73 to 4.10 is only a 10% change in gearing. If you were turning about 1800 rpm before then with the 4.10's you will be turning about 2000 rpm at the same speed.

Re: Rear end ratios

Go for 4.30 gears at a minimum. You won't even notice the difference going to 4.10s.

I'm running 4.56 with my 265 tires.

Re: Rear end ratios

Are you implying that the ~33" tires and 3.73s are not enough?

I have 33 w/ 4.10 (as most SMB4x4 packages do). I wouldn't change it just because, and it tows just fine- however when I went from 32s to 35s on the Jeep I could feel it when flat towing for the first time; got to be rolling resistance because it still handles the same Jeep on the trailer just fine.

If you're changing I would:
A) listen to carringb
B) go for the higher ratio, lower gears

I agree that 3.73 to 4.10 is too small a step if you're feeling like 3.73s are not enough.

(Note: Diesel 6.0 not the V10 in mine...)

Re: Rear end ratios

Yeah, the 3.73 just seem a little off when climbing grades. I'm really good about trying to hold the gear that the van wants too, rather than shifting back and forth. The van towed both my boat and trailer so good with the stock 245's and 3.73, I'm really just looking to get back to the same. I'm sure there is some formula to figure that out right? I agree though 4.30 at a min would probably be the best.

Re: Rear end ratios

I was running 3.54 with 305/16/70's (similar to 285/16/75).. and went to 4.10.
Won't turn back now. Miss that tall gear on the straights but it now climbs and tows great now.
I might go 4.30 next.. or if I go with 315 size tires, I might need 4.56.
I just wanted to see what 4.10 did for me before I went further..

Re: Rear end ratios

ct,

Where are you located?

There is a 4.10 LSD from an 04 E350 in Santa Clara, CA in the classified section of this forum.

I'm in Washington, UT about 100 miles north of Las Vegas. I'll check the classified section thanks! Do you guys have any preference on gear mfg's?

Re: Rear end ratios

There are charts you can look on to find the gear ratio/tire size combination. I've posted a link somewhere around here...
