I think maybe I inspired you.

I did put screen and also another door flap made of extruded foam to block out any noise/drafts/bugs when closed.

Oh I’m inspired, it’s going to happen. Got 2-4” round marine type deck access hatches on order. Went by a local marine supply but they didn’t have black. I went with these because I liked the o-ringed seal and screw off to open. Felt like that eliminates or at least mitigates any noise/heat concerns. There is also a nice shoulder on the backside that looks maybe 1/2 deep so at least that gives me some material to work with to add a screen/filtration.

Ian, that was the inspiration for me. It is a great idea. Thanks.

So after 4 years of use, what is your long term assessment?

I am glad I have them. However, I would say they are not a top need for me. For someone else, it might be a great addition. Sometimes you gotta be careful in a buildout to not “fix” a problem that you don’t have.

Maybe a bit redundant and not important but those worried about crossing water with these sorts of vents installed need to remember they're located above the exhaust pipe outlet and frame rail ever so slightly which probably never see such water?

Exhaust gasses would be a concern but with a good O2 sensor system inside cab that is probably managed well enough

Ok, just another data point of interest maybe. Drove home about a hour, so fully heat soaked. Parked it for 5-10 minutes then from under the van used a temp gun to shoot the temp of the frame where we are talking about drilling/cutting. The frame here is 120 degrees. The resonator about 12” away was 350ish degrees. So for some amount of time depending on ambient you will be drawing in some very hot outside air or pleasantly toasty for you mountain top guys.
