I'm hoping that someone who has recently dealt with this can help me.

I too snapped a wheel stud on the right rear of my 2006 SMB 4x4 conversion.

I got the spacer off with relative ease (a little clp and breaker bar) and my spacer popped off nicely albeit a little corroded.

However, I have 2 issues:

Firstly, I am having a bugger of a time getting the snapped off wheel stud (what's left of it - it snapped off flush with the spacer) pushed back out. I have not moved it and I'm now afraid that I'm going to start mushrooming it and make it harder. What's the secret? Shop press? I put some kroil on it and left it overnight. I put a BFH to it repeatedly.

Secondly, I am having a hard time locating the actual correct part for the replacement wheel stud. It is NOT the same as the studs in the rotor (Dorman 610-383) and these studs appear to have a larger head on them that recesses into the back of the spacer. Does anyone have beta on that part? If I find it, I will add it to the 4x4 Parts thread which is usually spot on and very helpful.

Will post pics if that would help jog anyone's memory.

I would suggest heating the stud as much as possible with a propane torch then let it cool.
Then a little more penetrating oil.
Then a center punch and a hammer, or an air hammer if you have one .
The heating and cooling ( expansion and contraction ) of the stud and the spacer is usually enough to break the corrosion between the two.

Jack,

Thanks for the advice. That is the path I have taken. Yesterday, I heated and cooled it several times, hit with a punch many times and even broke out my admittedly weak air hammer just in an attempt to shake it loose.

I'm hoping that by sitting overnight it might budge but honestly I'm not expecting much.

Well, Day 2.....no dice. Looks like I'm headed to Boise to visit my buddies at Naylor Auto Repair. Ugh.

Still looking for the part number on the wheel spacer studs if any has any intel.

Depends on what wheel spacer you have.. Did it come from SMB? You should try and call them. Did it come from elsewhere? Some of the cheaper ones use proprietary studs that you can't replace.. So you'd potentially need to replace the spacer or machine it out for a larger stud.

It was an SMB part. By all appearances, it looks to be something that should be able to be knocked out (as opposed to, say a welded stud). I am awaiting an answer from them but sometimes find I can get satisfaction on the forum in a more timely manner, hence the question.

EDIT: Just heard from SMB. They are sending me the studs and confirmed that they are, in fact, pressed into place.

I'm going to take them to a wheel place to see if I can get part information and will post up if I'm successful.

20 ton shop press = Nope

Acetylene and Air Hammer = Negative

Machine Shop lathe = ???? TBD

Anybody that thinks they have a chance of fixing a rear broken wheel stud in the field or on a trip might want to reconsider. If its just one stud, I recommend waiting until you are back home or plan to be somewhere for a while.

SMB says that the replacement wheel studs are no longer made but I have a couple on the way that were the last on the shelf. Hope I get to use them.
