'71 Toyota FJ40

I'm toying with the idea of getting a tow behind rig to haul to the mountains with me. I came across a 1971 bone stock Toyota FJ40 and went to check it out today. Are there any Toyota experts on the list? If so I have a couple of questions.

This thing has a 3 on the tree and the transfer case shifter is under the dash as well. I've never seen a setup like it. It has a 3 position lever under dash for high range, neutral and low range. Then it has a knob next to the lever to pull to engage the front axle. Is this setup reliable? Is it something I should think about converting to a floor shifter?

It looks like it has some kind of brake on the driveline. Is that the emergency brake?

There is one bit of rust behind the drivers seat that doesn't look like it's to deep yet and if I buy it I will need to move the seat back somehow. I think I have a plan to do that.

I'll try and get some pictures resized to post later this evening.
