In the straight on rear photo with the bikes all loaded I can't see much of your tail/brake lights or even your bumper backup lights. Is that really the case? Is that an issue your concerned about?

No, I don't think that is not really the case..... unless someone were tailgating as close as I was standing. I think it is somewhat of an optical illusion due to the angle from where the camera lense was to the tail lights.

Even for the tail-gaters the bikes can be re-positioned side to side (left to right) in relation to the center line of the bike rack; this would further minimize the footprint.

The rack comes with a reflector on the bottom tube. I was thinking about wiring a brake light to this spot through the trailer lights.

I'm not sure if this is of help or not but for what it's worth...

I am not a skilled biker (or photographer as you can see) but I did want a cheap/easy way to attach my Trek bike to the back of the SMB & still be able to open the door. This ladder mount bike rack (39 bucks from Target - so I can drive an SMB and pretend I'm tight with my money)

It's a cinch to attach. I can open and close the door. It will hold 2 bikes. Only catch, I have to put something over the handle bar to keep it from rubbing on the bumper when I open the door. (I use 2 socks - cause it's such a classy look.)

This allows me to keep my hitch step in place. Plus, my hope is this leaves me free to also use a trailer hitch box at the same time (if I ever get one.)

Here is another option that I just discovered. It's a little bulky, but keeps high dollar bikes clean and dry. They claim it will hold two bikes.

Mike -- on this carrier, could you hang your bike higher? I'm wondering because I'd like to be able to use my hitch-haul rack with a couple of cargo boxes (just tall -- or short-- enough so that I can open the rear door. ) I'd need to hang my bike so that the handlebars didn't interfere with the boxes; the front wheel can always be popped off and hung/locked on the carrier, but the fork would still need to clear.

We have used the Letsgoaero Gear Space 34 for two road bikes for about 5 years. Works great to keep them out of the weather, etc. Remove front wheels and install a couple fork mounts. Room for helmets, wheels, etc. also.
