Re: Fatbikes, MTB E-Bikes and more.

I'm really liking his pedal assist fat bike and with the places we all go it would be rid-able almost every place. Ok I'm a little biased to fat bikes but they are just fun and if you add assist it really levels the work you need to do that is until the battery dies.

Thanks, looks like one could have 3 or 4 packs and then charge them all up in a 4 hour period from one generator.

Your bikes look beautiful. If you ever come to Tahoe for our famous Flume Trail or Tahoe Rim Trail look me up. I live right at the bottom.

I fear I have been shopping more ghetto: mid drive Bafang and battery holders from alibaba. Batteries from our computer recycler and a 5 speed from craigslist. I know I am inviting criticism about flaming battery packs in wilderness areas and my 70 old year wife pushing 90lbs of bike back home. Therefor I welcome any suggestions of off the shelf bikes that would be better.

Storm eBike funding campaign. If you fund now for $500, you can get an eBike in June (theoretically).

Maybe, maybe not. Buyer beware.

My buddy picked up a Surly fat tire for a few of the off the beaten path trips he's done. I got to try it out on one Baja trip and was amazed at how nice it was riding around in the beach dunes. I was able to cover the same ground beachcombing in 45 minutes that would have taken me hours on foot. The idea is to ride with around 5psi and you get the same kind of floatation as when airing down the van tires in soft sand.

This was an aluminum frame Surly Pugsley fatbike and he decided he wanted a sturdier frame so I bought it off of him. I love beach combing and figured it would be good insurance to have an alternate form of transportation along when we're off at some of the more remote spots we like to explore.

Question: can you bolt on an assisted peddling system or do you have to buy a bike with it incorporated into the bike? I'm liking the idea of extending that range if we do need to ride out for some reason.

You could have a wheel relaced with a hub motor but I would go with keep it simple and just ride as is.

Serendipity!

I was driving home just now and noticed a fat tire bike cruising along. He followed the same route home over about 5 miles and wound up riding right past my house. I couldn't help but notice that the only time he peddled was starting off from the curb when the light changed. He was speeding along at 20mph and was still going strong when I pulled into the driveway.

It may have been mentioned up thread but what kind of range do you get with a powered hub?

I do a bunch of trail building for Mt Bike racing and decided to set up a Fat Ebike for the races. I'm also planning on getting in the back country a bunch to do a bit of fly fishing. The build just started so I'll post a few more pics later. So far this bike has been amazing.

You can almost certainly re-build your own front rim with a hub motor. You'll need all new spoked, but you will save the rim and won't have to compromise on whatever motor you can find on a fat rim.

It's probably not terribly shocking that folks with 4x4 camper vans are into geeky bikes. I've managed to resist the fat bikes to far, but only because justifying a 7th bike is hard. I've been on one in the snow and they are really big fun, and hard work.

Salsipuedes Canyon by Fatbike

For those interested, here is a trip report that my buddy put together (my) fat bike for. We've done many trips down to Baja and he ran across a report of a remote palm lined canyon in Baja that drains into the Sea of Cortez.
After countless hours exploring the canyon via Google Earth, he decided he'd found a couple of possible access points into the canyon and started planning out an exploration in via Fat Bike and out via pack raft.
Long read, but he goes into detail on the what and why of his setup. After his second attempt at it he eventually found a way in and rode the canyon all the way to the sea.
