Re: Hitch Motorcycle carrier feedback please

Roonie

can you measure from your tray to hitch pin?

What I've determined is that I am approx 33" from hitch pin to center of carrier tray ideally.
This does not take into account the fact that once a bike is on the carrier, the handlebars (which will face drivers side) may in fact be "over" the spare tire. This may allow me to move even closer.
The Versa Haul double rack can be ordered with just a single tray, and you can also "adjust" the tray in or out which I like.
My thought is to go with this set up and adjust in the tray as far as possible.

This allows me to use no extension and still clear the rear galley box/tire.

Re: Hitch Motorcycle carrier feedback please

My handlebars hit my spare tire and that is before compressing the front forks to tie it down with ratchet straps to the carrier. This is with the 14" extension. The spare is a 34" tire.

I really like the size and height of MX Hauler style. You've had both.

what is the best set up in your opinion?

Re: Hitch Motorcycle carrier feedback please

Is anyone using a "second" hitch box? I found some using "outriggers" or an extension going into each frame mounted hitch receiver. Main location and adding two additional receivers, one per side. I am referring to two with the second mounted right below the stock one.

thoughts?

Check out my Buddies Tan Van, he had hitchcrafters weld up two parallel hitch hole brackets welded to the parallel frame beams, then fabed the two steel arms (slight angled with holes in the ends) that makes the platform, bought and cut the other two aluminum channel pieces that go on top.. The other forms the ramp. Where the bike wheels sit on..
It gets ratchedit down in squat mode .. Isn't going any where 4x4ing..

Wish I had a newer picture of it lately but his custom made steel rear bumper that got added with the two hitch holes..has a pass thru..Holes that reach the welded to the frame hitch hole brackets. You can make it out zooming in on the pic..
He's also got a brand new Texas SMB top custom made with a hatch in the middle with about 300watts of solar covering most of the whole penthouse top, you can bearly tell its there. Surpassing my setup.
I'll see if I can find newer pics, here is an older pic:

Pic of My hydralic carrier, survives mild 4x4ing far but you can see the bike twisting back there when you get on a trail on bumps and holes.. Surprised it still works..

Re: Hitch Motorcycle carrier feedback please

Gents,

This seems to be the definitive thread on MC carriers: Motorcycle Carriers

Includes a few examples using multiple receiver hitches, with lots of photos.

Cheers,
Brent

Re: Hitch Motorcycle carrier feedback please

I just happen to be working though this problem now. Although not as elegant as the other examples, my solution was a pretty simple bolt up. I bought receivers for 4" camper bumpers that bolt on. I used the Swagman because it has a bolt to reduce play. Then I just bolted it up to the receivers cross member. Between the anti sway for the rack and the second support and its bolt for anti sway the unit is pretty rock solid.
