Toad jeep

I just installed this tow bar on my Jeep and am mocking things up. It’s a 1993 wrangler with a cj front clip and parts. I’ve never towed one before, but I have this dream of setting up my van as a base camp then using the Jeep to explore for the day. I still gotta get some longer safety chains on before my first test drive. I’ve heard you can hardly feel them back there when your towing them . The jeep is only a 4 banger and 5 speed so I don’t think it weighs a whole lot . I’m hoping my e350’s 5.4 will be up for the task!

My first vehicle was a 1964 Willys CJ-3B and we used to tow it (like your setup) behind a camper. We found it rather inconvenient to travel with, because we couldn't back it up when attached to the towing vehicle. The front tires would inevitably turn and cause all sorts of issues. When I replaced that jeep with a CJ-5, I was never temped to install another tow bar. IMHO, a designated flat bed trailer would be a better option. In the meantime, I'm also tempted to get another Jeep and bring it along...

I towed a YJ across the country behind my EB E350 with a 5.4. It did fine.

Wow cross country tow! That’s an adventure, this is re assuring for the small v8. I’ll probably start a little closer to home first maybe the cal desert, then hopefully Moab or Sedona at some point. Lots of day dreaming now.

FWIW I've towed a full sized E250 behind another E250, 435 miles one way. While that's NOT advisable the drive train didn't struggle one bit, brakes another story though.

Keep in mind the E250's involved both weighed in at about 5,400 lbs, the Jeep no doubt considerably lighter.

TJ Jeeps are around 3300# for a 2 door. The newer jk models are heavier you would think. A newer 2 door is 3900# a 4 door can be 4400#.
These weights are before you add bigger tires, bunpers winchs etc.

It's actually not the small v8, that would be the 4.6l It's just a small v8 around the big v10's and diesels common here. The 5.4 is no slouch. Remember they like to rev. Lots of power made up high. If you blow it up, which you probably won't, it was on it's way out anyway.

I only have a 302, so I had to set my sights a little lower when I decided I wanted a dinghy vehicle.

I am setting my van and tow dingy (4800 pound range rover classic) up right now. I am interested to hear what you did for lighting and such.

My van did not have a factory hitch or 7-pin plug. So I bought a new hitch from ford and added the 7-pin integrating it into the factory trailer harness electrical.

Then I went with the Roadmaster Falcon2 all terrain tow bar and there wireless brake system for the rover.

My next task is integrating the 7-pin into the rover for the tail lights. I also have a little trickle charger to keep the rover battery charged while under tow.

Planning an Alaska and trip with this setup.
