RWD doesnt' matter, but automatic (vs. manual) does. You can flat tow certain autos, Honda CRV for instance, but there are limitations and specifics. This is a topic that I'm sure is covered in spades on all the RV forums. Not many SMB folk tow a car given that not needing to is one of the beauties of traveling in an SMB (car sized almost) but I understand why you might like to.
I was told I absolutely could NOT tow my BMW 330 even though it's a manual, but hmmm, Blue Ox makes tow brackets for it. BMW nor anyone who works on them and not even Roadmaster (who makes the other 50% of vehicle tow brackets) want to weigh in on why so I decided to go for it. I've towed with no problems for several thousand miles now. On a Smartcar though you may have a warranty to consider. My car is older. Anyway, none of this likely matters if it's an automatic but you might want to ask around on the Open Roads Forum, IRV2, etc.

Thanks for all the input.
In our case its nice to park the van and go climbing without having to deal with a large vehicles in crowded parks or small parking areas. Also if the van goes in for repair or service we can still cruise around and not spend extra on rental cars. I know its not necessary but often we wish we had this set up.

On that note a tow dolly might not be such a great option...

You can just lock the steering. Most tow trucks tow dolly style.

I've been using a tow dolly for my Fiesta for the last 1.5 years. I'll probably sell that and get a trailer. Mine is a turntable style dolly and the van turns right enough the silly fenders sometimes rub the car's doors. I just bought a Focus ST so the turning problem will be worse now. I'm still on the fence between a trailer (which could double as a raft trailer) or flat towing (which is $$$ but fastest to switch between driving and being towed).
