Re: WANTED: Ideas for carrying surfboards, bike, and SUP's

Thank you. Yes I see that he says he installed an internal rack but I don't see evidence of it in the photos. I think I'll ask him to post a photo of it.

Magenta,

There's a pic in this thread, when the same van was previously for sale.

Some additional ideas here and here.

Cheers,
Brent

Re: WANTED: Ideas for carrying surfboards, bike, and SUP's

Can't deny theft, but I wrap thick cable locks around the bikes, and a separate one around the tail end of the boards with fins on so that they can not be slipped out easily. I am sure they could be stolen, but have yet to have anyone be able to get them yet. The solar panels are built into the rack on a "oven rack" type set up so that they can be slid out from under the boards to get maximum sun without removing the boards from the roof every time we stop.

Re: WANTED: Ideas for carrying surfboards, bike, and SUP's

Sorry...late to the party!

For the hitch-mount rear locking box, look at the StowAway Max (16cf?). I had one a few years ago and liked it, but note it wasn't totally waterproof -- in a frog strangler, there was leakage into the box.

I carry mtn and road bikes on a front hitch carrier. I use a flat (hoop) carrier from Performance Bikes; the carrier is locked to the hitch, and the bikes are locked with cables through the hitch as well. In "iffy" parking situations, I move the bikes into the living area of the van; I can't move around, but they're safe!

Thule makes locking sup racks called sup taxis. Not my favorite solution but they work fairly well. Some problems with the early versions. Buy brand new ones if you go this route.

You should check out the pictures of Jimmy Buffett's Sportsmobile, the Green Tomato. His Carolina shore odyssey is detailed on his website, Margaritaville.com. He carries at least one SUP, several boards and at least one bike.

Re: WANTED: Ideas for carrying surfboards, bike, and SUP's

Buffett's vans are very cool.
He has the hard top so he straps his boards to the side of his van. He straps then to two Aluminess ladders that he has mounted. The guys down at Aluminess showed me some cool prototype swing out board holders on my last visit. They mount to a single pole that they use for the ladders. Mounted on Driver side. Im pretty sure that I will grab a set on my next trip down (LOVE the guys down at Aluminess). I took a picture of the big Cheese in front of my sporty while he was out visiting last.
