When buying a van from out of state (California)...you need to pop the hood and check the emissions tag located on the passenger side. It needs to state the the engine meets "California Emissions". DMV inspector will look for that when registering a vehicle from out of state....if its not there your out of luck.
Only true for new vehicles (up to 7500 miles?). Used vehicles can be imported to CA, but they have meet tailpipe tests. A stock vehicle in good tune will pass easily. They will also vacuum test the fuel tank/charcoal reservoir and fuel cap.

I bought an '05 VW Passat diesel in '06 or maybe early '07, from out of state. At least at that time, as long as the vehicle had over 7500 miles, I could register it in CA. At the same time, CA now has smog testing for diesels, so I'm not sure if any 'importation' rules have changed.

Thanks, good to know...I get a different story from DMV every time I go in there, but I think I remember now reading something about the 7500 mile deal.

Re: 2004 E350 Extended Body SMB for sale- $26,000- low miles

I have been asked about the van a couple times this week, so here’s the story:

Had “buyer” from Cali supposed to come in Feb. They were not able to come then as they are supposedly a tax accountant, had some work/time issues that prevented them from coming to Ohio and driving back to Cali, and needed to push back the time for pickup. They still expressed interest, so I offered assistance in having someone inspect it for him in Ohio just to make sure any concerns he might have would be covered, but he declined on wanting to inspect it prior to purchase and we then made a verbal agreement on the purchase. I had him make a small deposit to show he was serious about the purchase, since I would be giving up potential buyers by waiting on him. He paid the deposit and he then booked a flight for April.

So over the last 2 months I corresponded with the guy and got everything together for when he flew into CLE, which he did Tuesday this week (Apr 17).

So, anyhow, after I went over EVERYTHING with him he then proclaims that “the gauchos in the back seem too small and looked bigger in the pictures.” I was floored. He could have easily asked about the specs on the gauchos from the very beginning or could have easily looked at the specs on SMB’s website.

I suggested that he could get a longer mattress for the penthouse but that apparently he did not intend on using the penthouse to sleep and that was not a plausible solution for his newfound issue with the space in the back. So he backed out.

Needless to say, I am not happy as I wasted much time waiting to complete the sale, driving well out of my way to meet with him, and needing to take time off work to do so.

So the van is still available but please PM me only if you are serious about it.

Sorry about the situation. To me, a commitment to buy is a commitment to buy, not a commitment to inspect the vehicle.

Good luck.

And I hope it was a non-refundable deposit.

Ok, so for the rest of us.....how wide/long is the gaucho bed downstairs when made up?

I understand the not wanting to sleep upstairs bit, as the useable width of the upstairs in the penthouse of the 2000 Dodge I have (which will be up for sale next month) is only 44".

Good luck with your further efforts to sell your van.

I would think the size would be 73 wide and either 49 or 54 long as SMB offers two different sizes
for something close to that configuration.

I think the Dodge and Ford have the same dimensions for RB but this is an EB and I don't think
Dodge made an EB version.

Just guessing on my part.

Yes, a nonrefundable deposit but it was small and was not worth the hassle. Oh well, lesson learned.

Regarding the gauchos, I would have understood had the buyer questioned prior to committing to purchase. Anyhow, the completed bed is approx 65 inches by 47 inches ( just went out and quickly measured). It appears the same as the rear of the EB 11 plan on SMBs site, which shows 73 x 49. I have a feeling the 73 on that plan is from one side of the van to the other, as that is the case with my van (besides the bed itself, I also measured the interior width where the completed bed is).
