LED (SMD) Bulb 1141/1156 trade for old cellphone chargers

For trade in San Diego area:

Thought I would throw it out there: I have a free* 13 SMD (higher quality LED) 1141/1156 replacement bulb in cool white (a tad bluish to my eye) *if someone would be kind enough to trade me for a few old car cellphone chargers. One 18 SMD 1156 bulb on superbrightleds.com is ~$20 shipped (definitely brighter than mine but this one works well for me).

I need the 12v to 5v stepdown boards in the cell chargers to complete my LED replacements of the florescent fixtures. I found a 6 pack of 12" SMD LED bars (made for home, 5v instead of 12v) for under $20 at costco. If I see them again, I will post but there was only 1 left, looked like an odd-ball.

This is the kit: http://www.amazon.com/Pelion-Lighting-S ... B0040UMHNE.

I experimented with one light and it worked perfectly with the cell charger stepdown. The light is perfect and the tubes fit perfectly in place of the florescent bulbs in the fixture. I could even hook up the remote but I don't know if I need it that slick. I tried hooking the lights up straight to 12v and it almost fried one.

I plan to post up photos of the project once I have everything done.

Anyway, please pm or email me if you have any interest. I'm sure I could mail but I doubt if it's worth it to mail the cell boards to me (could clip the wire to lighten up?).

Thanks,
Steve

Here is a photo of the 1141/1156 replacement bulb I have for someone who can help me out:

3, and I only need to the boards out of the part that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I need to solder them between my light bars and the switch. I have seen stepdowns online for $20 apiece, but they are overkill. I thought I would try to homebrew this as an experiment hopefully for the benefit of myself and others. Mmmmm, homebrew.

$25+shipping per light on superbrightLEDs vs. this kit at $20 plus an hour or two of work seems like a good tradeoff to me, plus I like to experiment.

Anyway, anything will help.

Why not just homebrew the 5v regulators. Its really easy

I have built a couple of them for about $3 in parts.

I think I used this design from this website. which added a diode.

I was just looking at some old chargers I've got here, but none seem to have the stepdown/output voltage labeled on them. Is the 5V pretty much a given for most of those battery packs?

Thanks a lot. Will look into that. My original motivation was to put some obsolete stuff to use instead of creating anew, but this looks fun. Did you just get the supplies at something like Fry's Electronics?

They should have the output voltage on the cig lighter plug side. Generally they are 5v, I believe. The ones I've looked at with the USB2 connection are definitely 5v.

I have never been to a Fry's but looking on their website they do list some components, so... ?
I usually buy at a local mom and pop electronics supply store. I try and avoid Radio Shack but they probably will have everything you need to do this project. At the mom and pop I might pay 0.25 for a capacitor that R/S packages up and sells for $1.75. They (R/S) are terrible for component pricing. You can also order anything online from mouser.com. They ship it (reasonably) usually the same day.

For some fun, after you build one, then try another, only smaller. You can make your own circuit board about the size of a dime and use SMD (surface mounted devices).

One of the 5v regulators I made powers a GPS antenna in the SMB.

Have fun

Re: LED (SMD) Bulb 1141/1156 trade for old cellphone charger

The chargers didn't have any input/output ratings that I could see. Here's the guts:

If they are useful, let me know and I'll get them in the mail; otherwise, no biggie.
cheers,
josh

Josh-

The more I think about it I am going to try to build the stepdown that Charlie described above. Please PM me with your info and I will send you my extra bulb. Thanks for checking.
