The V10 motor is pretty reliable and more capable of higher mileage than the other gas alternatives. Also lots of power.
There is a lot to be desired IMO for the V10. The first is it's reputation as a very reliable, powerful, and higher mileage motor. In the high performance marine world Illmore makes a V10 that makes a lot of stock power (no superchargers/blowers) that has proved extremely reliable and likewise is also capable of near twice the hours before rebuilt of its 540 V8 GM counterparts.
The power is great for those that like to tow. Fuel mileage is not a big expense if you run the numbers on a big vehicle like this. To give you an idea........I use to run twin 502's in a high performance boat and gas was the cheapest part. So for the people that need the power for towing or whatever its far more important than paying for the gas. When you look at the maintenance, repairs, and other ownership cost of a 4x4 camper van you will also likely see that the fuel difference in say a diesel or V8 gasser is likely the lowest annual cost burden.
There are other reasons as well. I can't stand Ford diesels. For me it's the noise and smell. They are so loud and smelly you might as well be driving a tractor. They can be hard to find good mechanics for and they don't do as well sitting for long periods of time. So if I wanted the most powerful 4x4 van capable of towing and I don't want to sound or smell like a tractor the V10 is best choice.
