I found a meth lab in Colorado, driving into a place that used to be a campsite. It's a good way to get shot is my understanding. For the record they're not like watermelon stands next to the highway, they're intentionally obscured from both normal vehicle travel and airborne spotting.

For many years between 1995 and 2008 or so, sheriffs deputies would show up at the Forest Service campgrounds I was camped at around Western Montana and talk to everyone in the campground, especially the ones with trailers, searching for mobile meth labs. I have seen less of that activity in recent years.

Unfortunately, the deputies would come around in the afternoon during daylight hours, and not in the late evening when the sometimes-violent-gun-nut-type drunks would start partying.

BW - Sorry I can't give you some info on camping spots, but I saw your post and couldn't stop laughing. Been awhile (mid 80's), but would you believe I used to live about 6 miles north of Kramer Junction? Yeah, the "little white ball" on the hill (if it's still there).

Back then, meth was only a "minor" problem, and 'boondocking' to me meant finding secluded spots in the desert with my GF.

I'm guessing the place has changed a little. Hope your escape went well.

Glad the mudslide didnt get ya! I heard ML was kinda chilly this weekend.

Any info on the Saline Valley road?, I also heard 190 shut down for mud as well as 395.

jstanley - now that you put it that way, I understand your concern.

I guess I should have clarified my living arrangements.

Didn't think anyone would remember the Federal Prison Camp. Just for the record, while I felt like an inmate, I was just a teenager at the time, and my father was staff at the camp.

There were 26 houses at the camp from the former Air Force Station there, and most of them were reserved for administrative staff and department heads. The former barracks buildings were used as the inmate dormitories. Since this was a Level 1 camp, there was no fence surrounding the facility. I believe the radar building was still active at that time.
