6x6 Ford E-series in 60 Minutes

The 5Jan2014 edition of 60 Minutes had a 6x6 Ford E-series van (and some other Ford I can’t see well enough to identify) hauling people and equipment up the Eyjafjallajökull vol cano in Iceland. That thing is a beast (the van or the vol cano, take your pick

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/volcanoes-60-minutes/

The entire segment is worth watching, but for the time-constrained, the van is shown starting at 1:30.

(Side question: Can anyone tell me why the forum deletes the word "vol cano" in posts? I've added a space on purpose to keep it from being deleted. The URL seems to work fine, however. Some sort of spam issue in the past?)

I think this should be Carringb's next van project!

Long story, short form: Unethical person pimping the vol cano grill all the while claiming to not be affiliated with the grill, until he was proved to be a distributor. All references to the grill were removed, and the word 'vol cano' was a victim of collateral damage in the purge.

Ah, so I guessed correctly on spam as the problem. Thanks for the info.

Another great feature of this video is that you can learn to say "Eyjafjallajökull" (at least as well as Scott Pelley can pronounce it .

Believe me, I've though about it! Pretty seriously actually until USA6x6 went under. They were they only ones that made a light-truck driveshaft spitter than I'm aware of. Those icelandic vans use 2 transfer cases instead. I'm not sure I want that complexity. And since then, I've installed under-floor storage, which I think I'd rather have over tandem drive since I already have 6 tires.

If I ever did try to build a 6x6 van, I'd probably use Expedition rear axles since they are IRS, and that would allow the floor to be dropped over the entire rear end, while also increasing ground clearance at the pumpkins. And having stationary pumpkins simplifies the drivelines, and could allow use a center diff to connect them.

We went to Iceland in 2012. We spent some time learning to pronounce Icelandic spellings, and while I think Scott had it wrong, his report was very interesting aside from that minor thing.

We learned Eyjafjallajökull is pronounced as EYE-yah-fee-yalta-yur-koolt.

If you ever get a chance to visit Iceland, take it! You will never forget it for as long as you live! It's pretty cheap to get there from the US east coast, and is only about 4.5 hours from Washington, DC. Icelandair is a great airline.

I should totally make Eyjafjallajökull, with the umlaut, get replaced with vol[s:dn9oqxmk][/s:dn9oqxmk]cano. It would be the only way to type vol[s:dn9oqxmk][/s:dn9oqxmk]cano on the forum!

It appears there is at least one other way to get vol[s:zb0psx7g][/s:zb0psx7g]cano on the forum.
