Re: Broken down in Page AZ
No solid advice at this time, but wishing you luck on finding the right part. Is your tank venting all working properly? Hope you get everything up and running soon.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
Wow Eric, hope problem resolves quickly.
Just to add to the knowledge base
I had a 240z which would exihibit intermitent fuel starvation/ stalling / low power / no start. After a year of chasing around replacing things I finally dropped the tank and found a small piece/scrap of brown craft paper in the tank. Just enough to occasionally get sucked by the fuel pick up and block fuel flow. Never had the problems again after clearing the tank.
Part of the investigation included installing a clear glass in-line fuel filter. (not sure they make them anymore as some people would have them shatter) it clearly pointed to/ narrowed to a fuel related issue.
Some of the vans have some type of fail-safe power down limp mode, but that ususally throws a CEL, right? Not sure the 460 has that feature.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
Madscience, no MAF on this beast. It's an old speed density 460, obd1 too.
My fuel tank is almost brand new and I replaced the filter a few months back, but I'm going to pull it today anyway since I have a spare.
Rockbender, the tank venting is most definitely suspect, especially since I had a Transferflow 2nd tank and removed it myself. I thought I put all the lines back to original but who knows? It seems weird that it would run fine for 20k miles.
1der, interesting. No limp mode in this old motor that I know of.
I am wondering if a fuel pressure regulator is a problem though.

Put a new fuel pump in it.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
I've heard it is not uncommon for fuel pumps to fail or drop pressure as the recirculated fuel becomes hotter and hotter when the pump is on its way out. Sit overnight or fill up with cool fuel again, and everything is good for a little while. I'd agree it might be a fuel pump. If it is an in-tank pump and a total PITA to take out, you might look into splicing in an electric in-line?

Broken down in Page AZ
I would love to know more about that Rockbender. I read a little yesterday. It's a total pita of course, but I won't be the one doing it. It's got 40 gallons of fuel in it right now as well.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
Does a 95 Ford have a test port on the fuel rail? If so get a fuel pressure gauge and leave it on as you drive. I feel your pain hope this works out.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
I'm pretty sure it does. I'm going to pull the doghouse later and look.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
I just changed my fuel pump last month, as you know its a pain in the ass. If its a venting problem ckeck the check valve in the fuel cap. If suspect just leave the cap off.

X2. Its running hot and boiling the fuel. Had all the exact same symptoms with my 94'. I always carried a fuel can in hot weather, so I could add some cool fuel, limp to the next fuel station, and top off with new fuel. Some trips, like death valley, just meant a few extra hours of "sightseeing" time. I actually drove it like that for a couple years, as it always restarted eventually. Sure was nice with the new pump though.
