Re: Broken down in Page AZ
I've had fuel pumps go intermittent on three different older Ford gas engines. I have never had a fuel pump go all-at-once on any engine.
Chewing my dang fingernails and root'n for ya'.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
I don't know how far you are from Page, but we had a positive experience with their Service Advisors two years ago, during the stuck-on fan clutch battle. They were empathetic and willing to go forward with repairs, even though the fan began working perfectly about 2 miles from the dealership. Since it was working we moved on. Stuck on again about 30 miles later. Got to St. George, Utah, stopped at the dealership... Service Dude looked at me like their was something growing out of my head. I'm not sure them Mormon fellers understand Mississippi-ese too good. Refused my bidness... sent me on my way.
P.S. I listened to good ol' carringb... beat on the fan-clutch housing with a borrowed iron rod and broke handled shovel, which goes against all my non-mechanic skill set. It has worked perfectly ever since.

Isn't that always the case when you need to swap out an in-tank fuel pump? Sending some good vibes your way.
BTW, if you're driving through California on your trip, fill up before you enter the state. Should be at least $0.10 cheaper per gallon. I'm talking about gasoline, but the same probably now holds true for water too.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
Make sure you change relay and fuse as well for fuel pump if you do change it.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
Thanks all. I just bummed a ride to O'reilley and swapped a couple of unneeded parts for a roll of exhaust wrap. I'll be wrapping fuel lines in the Page AZ heat the rest of the day.

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
Anyone care to weigh in on E85 in my old 460? I'm not thinking of using it of course, but something occurred to me. Not long before our first problem I filled up and noticed I paid 2.64 when I could swear 87 was 2.74 on the sign. I thought to myself, great! I get a break today! Fuel has gone down. Now I'm wondering if I bought a tank of that crap by accident. I wonder if it could've killed my fuel pump? I certainly know it can cause vapor lock on vehicles not designed for it. I thought I had purged it all by now. We've easily been 5-600 miles since then, with about 8-10 vapor lock (or whatever) break downs, one fill up of pure 88 octane and one half fill of 93 (10% ethanol).

Re: Broken down in Page AZ
Next time it fails try bleeding off some fuel from the test port, this is pressurized so be careful (fuel burns to!!!), this may tell if its vaporizing. Still recommend you getting a fuel pressure tester, harbor freight has them for 30.00...if you get the tester run the hose into the cab and you can watch the pressures while you drive.

Broken down in Page AZ
Thanks Dave but my wife isn't willing to gamble anymore and wind up sitting on the side of the road in the desert. Here we sit until it goes to the shop tomorrow morning.
We have no way to get around anyway. The campground is pretty much cleared out today. No rental car until tomorrow.
