Lightning is scary stuff.
A lot of times you can dig down in the ground and pull out earth that has been fused into glass. Some look like spiders. We call em Klinkers but there is a technical name I don't remember. Usually it happens where there is a direct hit to earth. It's bad ass

Re: Camping with Poptop Up in Thunder Storm

We (ocsmb, rawdawg) had a thunderstorm hit us in Joshua Tree a few weeks ago. Very few if any ground strikes but there was a solid 2 hours of rolling thunder. Made for a very comfortable afternoon. Rorbert took it all in stride.

Jacko thought he was at Disneyland

Yeah, that's the term. I have a few laying around. Some are quite colorful.

Re: Camping with Poptop Up in Thunder Storm

In Durango Co. last night thunder storm plus lots of rain and hail. Pulled top down when gusts of wind came up. Some hail size of quarters.....sounds horrible when hits the top of van. Looks like no damage to us. A few in campground had canopies damaged.

Re: Camping with Poptop Up in Thunder Storm

A fairly good article on lightning in the winter Overland Journal. Maybe they got the idea of doing an article by reading our little forum thread
