Re: "Clean" Diesel?

I will be now be avoiding taking my car into the dealership, in fear that they may choke into submission my peppy little Golf TDI. If I wanted that, I would've bought a tree hugging (not) Prius and relinquished all hopes of having any fun while driving a relatively higher mileage car.

I think you are right that the fixes will involve worse fuel economy and probably less power too.

I also strongly suspect that the EPA will invoke non-conformance on non-recalled cars too, meaning you won't be able to renew registration until they are made compliant.

...and then come the class action suits by owners who now get significantly less MPG than VW's original claim. The lawyers will get rich, just like with the 6.0L lawsuits (I never saw a dime).

Re:

Apparently both emissions testing/claims and mpg testing/claims (e.g., remember Honda's inflated mileage claims) are all submitted to EPA by the auto manufacturer by the honor self-test method. For something that actually matters to your and your childrens' health and the health of the planet, anybody concerned that the Democrats and Republicans set up a honor based self-inspection system for Iran's nuclear facilities on military bases?

Re:

Speaking go 6.0's... The E-series 6.0 from 2008+ was also non-compliant. F-series had to move to the 6.4L to maintain the same power levels when they added all DPF system needed to meet 2008 regs. That motor would not fit in the vans. But... Ford was upfront about this, and paid the EPA up front, while also cashing in the emissions credits they saved up by making the V10 a low-emissions vehicle. That was the main reason the 6.0 option went up $3500 starting in 2008.
