Yes there is a thickness limit of 1/2" on walls attached to or within 3' of living quarters and 5/8" on ceiling under living quarters.

If it's not too late, I'd recommend at least adding a junction box and associated wall switch for a ceiling fan. That's one thing I wish I had in my high ceiling garage bay.

Great point Herb. I have 2 in my garage. I have an L shape 6 car garage. The corner is work shop and the two outer areas are car access. One over the shop and one where I do all the car maintenance.

I have one ceiling fan in my loft area and a box fan pulling air from high in the "normal" garage area to move air into the loft to promote circulation, but I'm considering installing a whole house fan in the highest rear wall corner (of the wedge-shaped building) to exhaust hot ceiling air out of the space entirely.
