Cool Pinzgauer camper - Austrian SMB!

Pretty cool little Pinzgauer 4x4 camper conversion I stumbled across on the Web: http://www.pinzgauer-td.com/apps/photos ... =117404699

I think this would give a SMB a serious run for its money off road. Pinzgauers have a pretty good reputation.

Re: Cool Pinzgauer camper - Austrian SMB!

Definitely cool, but...

"PINZGAUERS can be comfortably driven on the highway at 60-65 mph and have a top speed of 70 or more, depending on tire size. They come with a 2.5 litre four cylinder air cooled, fully water proof industrial engine that produces 90 horsepower and runs on regular low octane pump gas, a five speed synchromesh gearbox, hi and low transfer case, on-the-fly 4 wheel drive, fully locking front and rear differentials, independent front and rear axles with retaining straps to confine axle travel within safe specifications, and a 20 gallon fuel tank."

The top speed alone rules it out of consideration for me. If I didn't have to cover hundreds of miles between locations, it might be OK.

Pinkgauer are very efficient off road but a nightmare on the road, slow, noisy, gas versions have low MPG and sometimes unstable
Older versions are gas but new ones are diesel

Re: Cool Pinzgauer camper - Austrian SMB!

I had a Pinzgauer six-wheel ambulance I intended to camperize, but after driving it around town and on the freeway, and considering the time and money to design and build the camper, I sold it and bought a Sportsmobile. Too damn slow, noisy and uncomfortable for a long trip. I still have a 4 wheel hard top Pinzgauer. I use it for short trips to the mountains or trailer it for longer trips.

Re: Cool Pinzgauer camper - Austrian SMB!

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I've spent much time drooling over Pinzgauer (& cab-forward Volvo & Land Rover) 4x4s, but I've suspected I'd really hate their on-road characteristics.
