We did. This one was sort of a sideways shaker, but only for about 3-4 seconds here, probably 30 miles from the epicenter.

Re: Earthquake question to the CA SMB'ers

You East Coasters are in more danger than us. One of the biggest quakes ever to hit the US was the one in New Madrid, which was probably felt in WVA. Made the river run backwards. We're kinda like Chile or Japan; always ready. More or less.

But what about zombies? will they rise up out of the ashes of the Big One?

Re: Earthquake question to the CA SMB'ers

Speaking of zombies, I've been thinking. You've probably heard about that chemical spill that shut down the Charleston WV water system. The chemical is 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, or MCHM. A lot of people drank the contaminated water before it was realized what was happening. There has been no formal testing to see it's effects on humans so now we're in unknown territory.

Who's to say what might happen in 6 or 8 months. We might start hearing reports from the Kanawha* River Valley about groups of shambling, disorientated people. Wandering aimlessly in raggedy cloths with vacant stares accompanied by the faint smell of rotting meat. The walking undead or the usual collection strung-out hillbilly meth-heads?

If I happened to live anywhere near Hollywood right now I'd be shopping around a spec script for my new horror masterpiece " Chemically Imbalanced Hillbilly Zombies from HELL".

Let's do lunch.

*(It's pronounced Ka-NA-wha. A heard a lot of newscasters getting it wrong.)

So, basically, it would be just the same as if the entire US Congress went to WV on a fact-finding mission.

Re: Earthquake question to the CA SMB'ers

This is interesting. From a link in the above Yellowstone article:

It's up, up and away for ancient trapped helium at Yellowstone

Quote:
In a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey determined that the famed national park was releasing hundreds -- if not thousands -- of times more helium than anticipated.

In fact, researchers say, the escaping helium -- about 60 tons per year -- is enough to fill one Goodyear blimp every week.
Quote:
Helium, or more accurately the isotope helium-4, is produced in Earth's crust as uranium and thorium decay. This is especially true at Yellowstone, where inactive rocks, or what geologists call "craton," have been estimated to be 2.5 billion years old.
