How many SMBs are out there

With a few days in the saddle you think of weird questions. Does anyone know about how many SMBs are alive today?

Re: How many SMBs are out there

Hi Doc,

So do you mean real factory built complete Sportsmobile vans even old VW conversions? Or do you mean vans that have been to Sportmobile for any type of work? What about vans that are two wheel drive vs four wheel drive they are all still Sportsmobiles right? You see where I am going? I don't think anyone really knows the numbers we (not me) can only guess.

A while ago there was a thread something like this and there were a few estimate but nothing solid. Here on the forum there are a lot of Home Built vans (including mine) that are Sportsmobile like meaning a van used for travel and camping and some of those look just like a real Sportsmobile. Others have purchased older real Sportsmobiles but have redone almost everything inside more to their liking. Some people have had Sportsmobile install just a pop top or something inside but not much else. There are quite a few vans (again including myself but hopefully not for long) that are two wheel drive and plan to stay they way. I haven't noticed any one with a Nissan van yet but I am sure they are coming as they sell more and more of those. Their is at least one old VW Sportsmobile converted van that posted a few times and there are more Sprinters all of the time. We have about 5,800 members and who knows how many really have vans or just want one.

It would be nice to know but unless someone from Sportsmobile really knows the number is going to hard to find out, sorry...

Re: How many SMBs are out there

Here we go again with the age-old question, "What is a Sportsmobile?" Is there one supreme SMB or many? Does it have a body of parts and passions, or is it just a spirit? Must we all be of one creed or are there many paths to true enlightenment on this subject? Even those who have "seen" a SMB can't agree on what it looks like, nor can they describe its attributes.

Re: How many SMBs are out there

We should only count the "true" SMB, which is to say the 50 floor plan.

Well I must disagree with Jage. It would seem that a "True Sportsmobile" has the manufactured by Sportsmobile sticker.

Re: How many SMBs are out there

Sorry didn't know this was a hot button issue. How about this, must be a BAV? Big Ass Van, cool stuff inside optional, owner must love outdoors and having a good time. No grumps allowed

How many SMBs are out there

If it has a PH top, the "50" floor plan, or both your on pretty safe ground slapping an SMB sticker on the vehicle. Absent that, it better be a pretty sweet van because you're dangerously close to being labeled a poser...
