Yes indeed.

The economics of a 4x4 van that can easily cost over $100k new are pretty hard to justify on a spreadsheet versus alternatives.

Until you factor in the fun/intangible value..........

By a wide margin, the SMB has been the best investment in fun with my family I've ever (and probably will ever) made.

What really gets me are the people who buy huge class-A motorhomes and use them maybe a week each year. Think of the upkeep on such a beast. At least with a class-B like a SMB you can use it for all sorts of other things (daily or weekend driver, etc.) in addition to just camping.

Re: I finally 'paid for' my diesel engine

Is the fuel economy on a 10,000lb 4x4 SMB with the V10 really 12mpg? I'll bet it's closer to 10.

I did not buy my van to worry about fuel cost...I figured I can afford it,I won't it, I deserve it period, and if the tree huggers don't like it so be it. I have my 401k, savings, kids collage fund and what I do with what's left is my business!!

No wonder why I'm getting 10-11 mpg.

And squeeze them in-between two similar vehicles in a campground next to the highway.

I have been known to enjoy tweaking the sensibilities of tree huggers while enjoying the SMB.

Back on topic, IIRC the diesel engine was only a $5,000 option when I bought my van. Could certainly be wrong on that........
