Initial "results" from Fossil Quest 2012

Here are some initial pics from this year's father & son trip. We have a whole bunch of trilobites that I need to take pics of too.

Re: Initial "results" from Fossil Quest 2012

I had no idea one could find fossils like these and keep them. As a Site Steward for archeological sites in Nevada I'm kind of hyper about leaving stuff where it is found. But it looks from the sign that this is come-and-get-em place. Sounds like a lot of fun for a father and son outing.

Just one question: Now what do you do with the fossils when you get them home?

Re: Initial "results" from Fossil Quest 2012

The source for the trilobites (550 million years old) was a commercial trilobite quarry in Utah called U-Dig Fossils, and as I understand it leased from Utah school trust land, and the fish fossils (Eocene era 50-55 million years old) are from a privately owned quarry near Kemmerer Wyoming.

What to do with the fossils? Remains to be seen. Of course my six year old son wanted to keep every fragment of every fossil we found. Right now, I have about 125lbs of rock I need to do something creative with. A few I'll attempt to clean up and find a way to display in our house.

What a haul, Herb! I'm sure you had a great time out there with your boy.

Looks like the SMB was replaced with a micro version!

Herb

The Excursion would look a lot better with a Colorado Camper pop top on it.

Herb those look so cool!! Maybe you could use them on some kind of wall or around a fireplace, or even a top for dining or coffee table use with mortar , maybe even outdoor furniture...would be cool...HEAVY but cool! Sons favorite Science teacher at school would probably love one! On a small plate stand for display on a coffee/end table, gifts from your son to Grandma n Grandpa! Aunts & uncles! You'll be down to 10 lbs in no time!!...One thing for SURE, that looks like the kind of adventure/hunt that would delightfully steal the hours away!! Gold panning, fossil hunting, gem digging, all too fun! Thanks for sharing!!!
