Landslide closes HWY 89 south of Page.

Check this out. An impressive landslide south of Page, AZ has closed the highway. For those travelling north-south or vice versa you'll want to go through Jacob Lake on the N. Rim.

That whole section of road sits on a rotational landslide block so it probably got reactivated. There’s going to be lots of unhappy boaters heading to Lake Powell in the next couple of months. News Releases: http://www.azdot.gov/CCPartnerships/News/NRel3399.asp

Looks like I picked the right week for not going to Arizona. How would you like to hit that in the middle of the night!

We're heading to that region in late May... looks like I might have to lock the hubs right along there

Damn, that's going to be an expensive repair.

We're heading towards Phoenix tomorrow via SLC. That was sorta on our route... Oh well, I'm sure there are gravel roads around it.

Yes there are but the road south of Page through the res that paralleles the hwy has the worst continuous washboard I've seen in years. In November we got about 3 miles down it and gave up and turned around. You would have more fun trying to drive across the slide.

The easiest thing to do since you'll be going through Kanab would be to just go over the north Rim at Jacob Lake on 89A. It's actually shorter by a few miles. That area is getting some snow atm but should be ok tomorrow.

Re: Landslide closes HWY 89 south of Page.

It looks like it is on the long, steep section of 89 just north of the intersection with 89A.

Really going to hard on the tours that float down the Colorado from Page to Lee's Ferry. Long detour for the bus trip.

Doesn't sound like they will let you go down to the Horseshoe Bend Overlook.

Yep, just north of Bitter Springs and the turnoff. In this google earth image you can see the road contours a bit around what is a paleo-landslide. Note the scalloped chunk out of the Echo Cliffs and similar whitish rocks which are Navajo Sandstone in the slump block.
