Long shot request - Ring & Pinion set up tools - Page 2

Although I had a generous offer to borrow another forum members high $ tools for this, I ended up buying some cheap Amazon stuff which seems to be getting the job done.

Here's where I am now. Those of you in the know, what do you think? Not sure how to fine tune it to "push the pattern" down the teeth without screwing up everything else. Backlash is perfect right now too.

This is a back breaking job but the engineer side of me actually enjoys it somewhat.

That looks quite good.....maybe a smidgen high toward the crown of the tooth. The "ghost" patterns on the teeth that you didn't paint look pretty good too....you can see some paint above and below the pressure area on the coast side.

What's your backlash and what's the spec?

I'm no expert (I've done exactly two of these) but I think getting the root-to-crown position correct is more important than the heel to toe position. Also, the pattern looks different between face hobbed and face milled gears as discussed here:

The ghost patterns on the drive side appear to be slightly toward the crown...there's no paint up by the crown...you can also clearly see that you have some distance to the root on the drive side in the ghost patterns.

Thanks Boywonder. Backlash spec is .007 - .009. I've been hitting .007 or .008 (don't recall which this one was.

I hadn't thought of paying attention to the ghost patterns. That's a good idea.

I'm going to add some shim to the pinion, reset backlash and see what I get. I think where it is now would probably be OK but just looks like the pinion needs to be pushed in a little bit further.

I may also take ibuprofen before I start today! Loading and unloading the carrier takes a toll on my lower back! I also had the carrier shimmed pretty tight this last go so I'm expecting a bit of a chore getting the carrier out today.

Well, I went too much first time on pinion shims. Then backed off but had a hard time with backlash. I'm now at a pattern I think I can live with but not sure if my backlash is acceptable. The ring gear has a hand written .006 on it which my hunch is the backlash it was set up with at the factory when paired with the pinion. Just a hunch though. The generic instructions that came with it say .007 - .009 for backlash. Various internet places say .006 - .010 for GM 10 bolt. I'm now at .006 even. What do you guys think? This is a front axle which won't be spinning unless I'm 4 wheeling so not sure I'm too concerned with it over heating.

First set of patterns is where I am now and second set are with too much shim on the pinion.

I also managed to mushroom the end of my pinion a bit because I'm an idiot. I can probably repair but how do you guys repeatedly "tap" out the pinion when you are going through the set up procedure?

Appreciate your insight as I stumble through this.

I say send it!

making a setup bearing that has a littler looser fit is ideal. I don't like to hammer on the end of the pinion directly with a steel hammer so I use a big dead blow mallet or a softer material (aluminum or brass or wood) between the hammer and pinion. I've also used my air chisel to do it. Kinda depends on how clean of a swing I can get.
