Re: Motor sporting SMBers out there?

I raced outboard hydroplanes as a kid.

Now I avoid racing, but like track-days on my home-built motorcycle

The van is a great portable 'garage' at the track with power, shade, compressor, etc.

Here's my track toy: 2005 Lotus Elise with 1.8L 350hp supercharged engine and lots of suspension and brake upgrades.

Re: Motor sporting SMBers out there?

Whoa! that thing could probably pull better than my van. VERY nice.

Only problem is I hardly fit in those...but maybe that's a good thing from the owner's point of view. And of course I did fit in a spec miata, but that was with some hacking. Which would be a shame on that Elise.

Can you race it?

Motor sporting SMBers out there?

Here goes.....bringing it back from the dead, or at least from 2013!!
Purchased a 1995 E36 M3 back at the end of January from Glen Shelly, a small 2 owner local auto brokerage that specializes in finding and sorting BMW's, specifically E30 325's and E36's.
I had driven a few of their cars, including a really nicely sorted although higher mileage E30 325iX with a manual swap, another '96 E36 M3 and a private sale E46 M3. While the E46 had plenty of more power and handled great, it just didn't feel as connected or have the appeal to me as the older cars did. Plus, the timing wasn't quite right as I was waiting in cue for the buyback on my VW TDi.
Thats when this '95 with 86K popped up at Glen Shelly. It had most major preventive maintenance done, a few tasteful mods including a chip and exhaust, and the black interior is in great shape with manual vaders with no rips or tears.
The only issue was that the previous owner had stuck on this god awful LTW replica rear wing, and had hacked up the trunk lid in the process. Thats gotta go! I had the lower riser plate shaved, repainted and reinstalled as a low profile spoiler to cover up the mess, I really like how it came out. Here it is after a few other cosmetic changes, new wheels, sport springs and shocks, clear markers, a couple of mechanical fixes and cleaned up. Love how this thing sounds and drives!

^^^ beautiful and super low miles, good find. love the amberless tails and front lip too. what exhaust? I really like that it still retains a stock looking set of tips.

ive got to flog on a handful of well sorted e30's and 36's at the local autoxs and both have been nothing short of impressive. love the turn in on the e36's. such a responsive car. theres a couple of bmw's id love to own. one of them an e36 m sedan and a e39 m5.

do the folks that convert the ix's to manual ever put any hp to that drivetrain? ive heard that drivetrain isn't too stout.

An E36 M3/4/5 has been on my list for a while. Unfortunately, they are all clapped out here in CA so its been difficult finding a clean example. Might be picking up a different fun driver soon though, so I'll post up if I end up getting it.

Oh yes, the beloved 3/4/5. I've always wanted one. For those unaware, That's an BMW 3 series, 4 door, 5 speed. They were produced only in the e36 3-series line from the mid to late 90's. Rare and amazing little cars.

Don't think so, not really a mod or performance shop, they mostly find good clean examples, mainly clean drivers, and sort any mechanical problems and freshen up any cosmetic things with oem parts. Mostly, the super low mileage garage queens usually find their way to EAG where they slap on a huge asking price and drive the market price on all of them up.
I don't think the E30's in stock form can take much in hp gains, these guys have gotten them in where the previous owner have added chips and other moderate mods. I believe there are several chip options available for a modest hp gain out on the market, maybe a 10-15 hp gain. Anything more than that requires further engine mods on those E30's. While not a speed demon, they get up and go and they handle surprisingly well for cars of this era, esp those iX's, I was surprised when we went for a drive, Alex, one of the owners of Glen Shelly(a BMW driving instructor as well) was telling me to bury the pedal at the apex of a turn and keep on it, the thing just stuck.
