Re: My neighbor's '56 Porshe goes up in smoke (pics)

What a shame. Looks like a Speedster. Scary.

Sounds like it backfired through the carb when cold and started the air cleaner on fire. From there it's a short hop to the float bowl...

Bummer. Feel sad for the car and your neighbor.

Re: My neighbor's '56 Porsche goes up in smoke (pics)

We hit it with the full contents of two different fire extinguishers, but the driver wasn't able to get the hood up, so all we achieved was to slow it down some. Our fire dept. is only three blocks away, so that plus the fire extinguishers are probably why the front end was still sort of intact.

I didn't take pictures until it was clear that we needed to back off and wait for the fire dept. Wish we could have done more.

What tipped me off was this faint wisp of 'fog' passing by, almost like the marine layer around here, except it was moving in the wrong direction for marine layer. Went outside to see what was up & ran straight back in for the fire ex.

Many times opening the hood is worst thing you can do, as it provides lot of extra oxygen or the fire. Reminds me to get a Halotron fire extinguisher in each vehicle.

Re: air to the fire - yep. The FD eventually pried it open with an axe.

Turns out it was a kit car: http://www.keyt.com/news/vintage-model- ... index.html

Still, this has to be one of the worst experiences a car guy can have.

Re: My neighbor's '56 Porsche goes up in smoke (pics)

My neighbor stopped by with a replacement for our fire extinguisher - good neighbor!

Turns out it wasn't me who cursed him. It was the guy who stopped him on the street the day before and said, "How much do you want for it? Name your price, and I'll pay it."

He says he told the guy he'd look it up and call him the next day...

Have your neighbor agree to a price quick, before the buyer asks to see it again.
