We had a HPFP failure on our TDI this year at 95,000 miles. Sounded like the fuel pump was going to fly apart in a million pieces. It sort of did too...in the form of metal shavings filling the filter housing. VW replaced the entire fuel system, no cost to us and it's warrantied for an additional 300,000 miles.
It is a very low failure rate overall though. Not much of a concern in my opinion, especially on newer models.

I lost all faith in VW (at least in our country) when on VW's BHW diesel engines (mine's an '05 Passat TDI), the chain driven balance shaft modules started to catastrophically fail (taking out the entire engine in the process), and while VW designed a gear-driven balance shaft module replacement, VW Group America doesn't feel compelled to replace the module until after it fails, and only then if the vehicle is still under warranty.
So VWGA thought I'm supposed to let my wife and my young son drive around in one of their vehicles until the engine grenades in traffic, even though you could hear the extra noise and feel additional vibration from the thing starting to come apart. "Sounds like a diesel" is all the local dealer would say.
Cost me over $4K to get the damn thing replaced with the improved part. The part that was supposedly only redesigned due to 'supply issues' (that was the official VWGA line). I did not have a VW dealer replace the module, I had a local VW TDI expert do it instead.
Yeah, I'm still bitter about it.
Oh, and VWGA is really good about blaming failures of just about anything on the customer using the wrong oil or 'bad fuel'.
