Ima say a couple of decent tracking dogs could pick up that guy if they are finding camps he's left behind strewn w/ trash et al. 'Course, I'm not in possession of said dogs, and that "shoot from a tree" part may be dampening vigorous search efforts.

Too bad Navy Seals cannot be allowed a little domestic practice. Mr. tough survivalist could find out what tough really is.
Remember that ranger who got shot in Moab a year or so ago? I can't remember if the shooter got injured or not, but I do remember many speculated he would not be able to survive in the wilderness. Did they ever find the him or any remains? I wonder if this could be the same fugitive.
This guy has been out for approximately five years. They should just make a stocked cabin into a man-trap; breaks in but doesn't come out and then they go collect him at leisure.

Maybe spike some of that alcohol he goes for or booby-trap some of that ammo to go off when touched. Or go with your man-trap idea and then a cage with a grizzly bear pops open; he can see if he is a real mountain man like Jedediah Smith was. Smith killed a grizzly in hand to hand combat, but the grizzly sliced his face off the front of his skull. His compatriots didn't have the stomach to sew his face back on, so he did it himself.

Or, just forget about him in there...
