So true especially in more remote regions where animals don't see a daily influx of tourists. Spray's better than nothing I guess. I know a lot of people carry something other than just bear spray. Others suggest playing dead is your last resort in some cases if you can't flee. I always try to keep out of a situation ahead of time but sitting around a campfire at night leaves you somewhat exposed. At least with a little common sense and staying aware of your surroundings, you might avoid shooting anything. Dogs are a great alarm but I not a dog guy.

Dang that's scary. That dude's head wound looks horrible, and he hiked 3 miles out! There's a link on Youtube to Inside Edition or something that did a piece on it and shows the head wound later. That's a monster gash!

A couple years ago there was an interview in the Juneau Empire with a guy who was mauled. His photo make him look like a mummy wraped in gauze, and he said " The thing I'll never forget for the rest of my life was the sound of the bear crunching my skull" Think about that one for a bit...............

He said the bear attacked from 80 yards out. That seems unusual to me but I don't live in bear country. Is it common for bears, even with cubs, to attack from that far out? Seems like there would be no reason for the bear to attack.

I noticed that too. He was pretty dazed and spent in that video. Maybe he meant 80 feet? I would think lots of us encounter bears at 80 yards any time we hike and never know they are there, and probably vice versa.

Without reading the Bear Attacks book and getting fully educated, one thing I have read is that a Sow with Cubs can be a very unstable situation. Juvenile Males are also unpredictable.
The fact that it tracked him and went after him a second time is also pretty crazy. he's very lucky to be alive. My buddy in Alaska carries a 44 magnum revolver. I think I would too.

I think the rule of thumb when using a handgun with a bear is to have 2 bullets; one for the bear and the second for yourself if you don't kill the bear with the first shot.
