I've found (here in CA anyway) that the sow lets quite a bit of room between her and any cubs from time to time like when feeding. I got up really close to a few cubs and when the sow saw me so close she charged on me. Probably more close to 50 yards away but I was stunned how fast she ran on a steep downhill slope.

I've read that bears are slower downhill too due to their front legs being shorter than their rear legs. I don't want to find out!

So did I. Oh and thought they're afraid of a campfire.

Well,I'm still seeing bears every day, and since I am often the only one in camp on the weekends, I've decided to buy a gun. A Glock 20 10mm to be exact. It may not do me any good if a bear charges me (doubtfull I could hit it) but at least I feel better packing the thing. I plan to run several boxes of bullets through it though to improve my aim, but I doubt that in a split second I'll be able to hit much, although if it's chewing on my head, and if I can avoid shooting myself, hopefully I'll be able to distract it long enough that it spits me out. (assuming that I can get to the gun, but I plan to use a cross draw holster so if I'm rolled up in a ball on the ground hopefully I can still get at it.)

^ Nice choice. Congratulations. 10mm and .40 would both be nice choices. Go practice with your 10mm, get used to the heavy recoil, and practice drawing. Glad to hear you gave up on bear spray!

I agree. Lots of guides starting to carry those. Most are running an aftermarket barrel that can take higher power loads than the stock piece.

I'm not really clear on the differences between the 10mm and the .40, but all the stores seem to be stocked up with .40's. The 10mm's are rarely in stock. I made the choice based on several online reviews after searching "best bear defense handgun" and talking to different folks. The guy who hauls out my boat is a gunsmith, and has a used one he said he will sell me today, so rather than having to order and wait a couple weeks, I hope to run some rounds through it this weekend.
