Off Road Lights

I was pulled over this A.M. in Julian California by A CHP officer for having my Hella HID Bumper Lights uncovered ! He informed me that the ruling has been changed recently to make This a Moving Violation as opposed to the old tried and true Fix It Ticket . He was quite taken with the SportsMobile , so I did a Share and Tell for him and three people in downtown Julian and ended up with a Fix It Ticket for no Front License Plate instead . When he first pulled me over and arrived front and center at my now opened window and explained that he had pulled me over for uncovered lights , I began a controlled laugh at which point he asked if I had been drinking ? I told him the reason for finding his presence so funny was that when I left home at 5:00 A.M. the covers were on my lights . We stopped for a Sausage McMuffin in Temecula where some well meaning person saw fit to remove and leave with my third set of covers . So the moral of this story is keep your lights covered , don't eat greasy food , and never , never laugh in the presence of Police Officer while you are looking down at Him .

Re: Off Road Lights

Crap. A moving violation? You've got to be kidding! I guess California's going to fix our budget problems one ticket at a time.

I have covers on my SMB aux lights (I assume we're only talking about the forward lights?), but they would be easy for anyone to help themselves to, like what happened to you. I guess the lights in the bumper are OK? Just about every car now seems to have "driving" lights.

I do have LightForce lights on my Bronco. They have yellow, fog covers on them, but I guess that's not going to cut it. I'll have to see if LightForce still sells their blackout covers.

Herb, Where are you going to get your covers? I need a pair and lightforce.com does not sell direct.

Haven't really decided yet, but probably from the place below, if for no other reason than to give a Bronco-specific vendor some business, and help him stay in business. If someone else has a really killer deal, well then who knows. I need to do a little more searching, but I'll post where I buy from, hopefully within the next couple of days. It looks like LightForce filters/covers are sold individually, so keep that in mind.

Re: Off Road Lights

Would a circle of black paper or black felt/cloth inside of the lens cover instead of over the lens work for a cover when not in use? Are the police afraid that we will turn them on on the highway? If we have yellow lens shouldn't we turn them on in the fog? How can we, if we have a lens cover on them?

Unfortunately, I'd have to guess it up to the individual CHP officer, and how much they want to pull you over. If the real problem is that people turn on higher power lights than allowed by DOT, then cite those people, don't cite someone because the potential is there. Guilty 'til proven innocent.

Sad things is, I'll probably now have to spend $40-$50 just to avoid the hassle of fighting the ticket in court.

Re: Off Road Lights

I painted a spare set of covers black.

Police sometimes do not use good judgment.

Re: Off Road Lights

Oddly enough the CHP Officer told me that a couple of people had told him that they made
their own cover's for their lights after having the OEM covers stolen , he explained that they lost their theft appeal when home made . He patrols from Julian to Anza Borrego and said that
it was not uncommon to to pull 12 or more people over a day on Highways 78 and 79 for this
now moving violation and that a bulletin had been sent out to areas that have ORV parks in their districts ? Thankfully he had never seen a SportsMobile so his pursuit of knowledge overcame his need for authority .

Re: Off Road Lights

Or attached... I would think $3 in hardware store small gauge cable would keep your covers handy. On the opposite end just make it unobvious to disconnect and the would be thief will probably just leave them hangin and move on.
