Pine Sap On Acrylic Window: Help! Now What?

My van has some acrylic windows. And my garage comes complete with all sorts of highly toxic chemical cleaning liquids, acids, and adhesive removers. I'm certain one of these products could remove some pine sap from a window. But I'd like to be left with a window that's undamaged when I'm finished.


So....how should I proceed? This would be simple if I was working with a glass window. But I'm a bit apprehensive with the acrylic type.

Do you have any scrap acrylic?


My solvent list in order of potency (and ability to melt plastics) looks something like this:


dawn/simple green
Isopropyl alcohol
Mineral Spirits
Acetone
Brake cleaner


It usually gets dicey with thermoplastics around acetone......and brake cleaner for sure.


If you have some circuit freezer you could freeze the blob and try to pry it off with your fingernail.

Try GooGone. Check it out in some inconspicuous spot, first.

As with any recommendations, I try a small section on a test piece first. But whatever you use, I would follow up immediately after by cleaning the glass with an isinglass marine cleaner/conditioner.
I've heard of Pinesol used on boat isinglass (never tried it myself): soak a Q-tip with pinesol and rubbed it on the sap for a few minutes. Again, I'd wipe with water quickly after, and then treat the window with a cleaner/conditioner.

One of the Boat Yards down the street uses the hand cleaner auto repair shops use to clean their hands - they use it for any grease or oily smears on isinglass windows. Think its 'gojo'.

I always use Plexus, but I've also never tried using it to clean away pine sap.

I haven’t used it on acrylic, but alcohol based hand sanitizer like Purell works great to remove pine sap.

Goo gone
rubbing alcohol
carburetor cleaner

If you don't mind Eric, I'd (REALLY) like to travel down for a visit so we can test the last two on your list - just to corroborate your claims.

I should add that the first three on my list were very literally my first three choices for removing stuff from stuff. WD-40 is a slow miracle worker on gooey stuff, Goo Gone is similar, rubbing alcohol is usually used for clean up after but works great with a fairly rough rag, like an old washcloth, on gooey stuff.
