Those saying no performance gains are making an incorrect assumption that the fuel is going in a truck designed for the current ULSD fuel. I bought a new 95 Chevy Dually w/ 6.5L Diesel and I still have it...I first noticed it not sounding quite right when they went from 2500ppm (?) to 1500ppm sulphur. When they went to 500ppm very noticeable loss of power and even more noise from the engine. I have had to add Stanadyne fuel additive ever since. So yes my motor would run much better on higher sulphur off-road fuel. If it was convenient I'd run it for sure, I've never heard a single story of any authority checking any redneck's pickup around here in 30 years. Lots of guys have auxillary tanks in the bed of the truck for fueling farm/construction equipment...I guarantee they pump it into their truck especially when on-road fuel was $4.00 a gallon. On the other hand, it would probably be stupid to put it in a 18 wheeler navigating weigh stations and DOT on I-75 but that's not what we're talking about.

High sulfur diesel went from an average of 138.6kBtu/gallon in 1994 to 137.5kBtu/gallon in 2014 which would be ULSD. Most of the drop happened in 2004 with the process changes required for LSD. Regardless, that's less than a 1% reduction in energy content, so I think it's unlikely to be felt in the seat of your pants. Stanadyne is a great product however, and can restore efficiency lost to other reasons.

I'm very sensitive, I notice everything.

They also do it in CA. I've never got caught with my E-350/6.0 but have been waved through a couple CHP road stops with my gasser pickup. They were even stopping and checking all diesel RV's.
