Selling a California Diesel Vehicle

The DMV website states that a smog certificate is not required to transfer a title if the vehicle is diesel (among other things). Can any happy ex-diesel owners verify that? I find it interesting because we now do have a "smog" inspection every other year like older gas vehicles. Obviously the new owner would have to pass and get a certificate at some point in their registration cycle. Thanks! Pat

Re: Selling a California Diesel Vehicle

The CA DMV website says pretty much all diesels 1998 and newer will need a smog inspection. When selling a vehicle, its the seller's responsibility to get the smog inspection done.

Re: Selling a California Diesel Vehicle

That is what I was expecting but then I read this https://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochure...cts/ffvr32.htm:

Is a Smog Inspection Required?

When you transfer ownership of a vehicle that is four or less model years old, a smog certification is not required; however, a smog transfer fee is collected from the new owner. When a vehicle is more than four model years old, the seller is required to obtain smog certification when transferring ownership of a vehicle UNLESS certification was obtained within the last 90 days or the vehicle is:

Hybrid
1975 year model or older
Diesel powered
Electric
Natural gas powered and has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 14,001 lbs. or more
Motorcycle
Trailer
Vessel

Re: Selling a California Diesel Vehicle

On another page of the DMV site the list you pasted seems to be more detailed. I found this:

Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption?
Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:

•Hybrid
•Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older
•Diesel powered 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs
•Electric
•Natural gas powered with a GVWR rating of more than 14,000 lbs.
•Motorcycle
•Trailer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would think that if your vehicle isn't smog exempt, then you would need to get it smogged for an ownership transaction.
