Thanks for input, all. I'm still trying to decide. Looked at a Roadtrek 170 (RB on Chevy chassis), which is very nice, but frankly has more bells and whistles that we really need. Maybe we'll just keep our SMB and figure out a better way to handle the Porta Potty setup. For a truck camper, I'm only considering pop-up models in order to keep as low of a profile as possible. Something like a Four Wheel Camper or Hallmark model on a medium-duty pickup with four-door cab that I could use as a regular driver (I work from home so don't put a lot of miles on my car).

I sold my quigley 4x4 a few months back after 8 years of camping all over the country. I ordered a F450 crew cub lariat chassis cab 4x4. Going to put a flatbed on it, boxes with a Phoenix pop up flatbed camper. Room, comfort with all the pluses. I’ll have about 130k in it when it’s all done but it will be everything that the van wasn’t. The only downside is I have to get out of the truck to get in the camper. Being on a flatbed I get 8x10’ of floor space plus the bed is over the cab so there is no mucking with anything to go to sleep. That little bit of more comfort is worth it, I’ve been stuck in the van for a few days caught in a rain storm or snow storm and 10 degrees and it isn’t fun or ThIs will at least give me more room to move about. Haulmart also makes a flatbed pop up camper that’s well built.

I wonder if there's not some practical aka "affordable" way to graft a slide in camper shell onto an E-Series cab/chassis?

I don't use my vans for any sort of camping but not being able to move between the cab and sleeper portion would be an annoyance I'd not enjoy.

Weldtech and Ujoint make lift/4wd kits for Class C Motohomes. We're seriously considering this route.

Even better!
