SoCal Places to Go

Heading to Borrego Springs to meet up with other vans and 4 wheelers for a couple of days of off road training. We were going to go to South Carlsbad State Beach and camp on Sunday the 12th and 13th but now are rethinking that plan. Not really necessary for us to hit the ocean after all but now we wonder what neat places there are to see maybe south and west of Anza Borrego SP. Looking for some camping/hiking, scenic areas that would keep us away from the crowded coastal areas. We have to leave for Organ Pipe in AZ on the 14th but we just need to fill a couple of days.

Looks like some nice mountains and mountain roads/trails on the Benchmark Atlas but not really sure what it's all like.

Death Valley is too far north to make it worthwhile and we would save that for another day.

Thanks in advance.

Is your van 4x4? If so...
Coyote Canyon and tributary Sheep Canyon & Cougar Canyon should fit in nicely with your schedule. This is one of the nicest places in Anza Borrego state Park ABSP
Sheep Canyon Camp 33.365494, -116.478984
Has it all: Water crossings, palm oasis, waterfalls, grottos, caves. After all the rain this year the waterfalls will be booming. Google "Sheep Canyon ABSP" if my links don't work below.
The road gets rough after the major water crossings, for about 3 miles up hill. That bit is challenging but not over the top. This part weeds out the timid SUV, Subaru, Lexus types. Keeps the crowds down. Easy after that. I've been back there in various 4x4 and a baja bug. Forum member PETE has taken his 4x4 SMB back there several times as well. I highly recomend it!

If you're into desert oddities, Salton City is just East of Anza and is worth exploring around. I always get an eerie feeling just being near the shoreline there.

South Carlsbad State Beach is really nice. The sites are large and the views from the ocean side campsites are great.

Thanks guys. Yes, our van is 4x4 so we can get to some more out of the way places which is what we like. Keeps the riffraff out. The beach is still a possibility for sure.
