Sportsmobile recovery

Was watching the latest video from Matt's Off Road Recovery on YouTube yesterday and mixed in with the work on their Banana was the recovery of a Sportsmobile with a shredded tire near Lake Mead. The owner was an older gentleman named Rick. The SMB first shows up about 10:30.

I love watching Matt and his crew. They seem like great people to hang out with and good to know about in Utah.

I agree, a great group of people. Have learned about recovering a vehicle while watching their videos.

I've been watching these guys for a long time now. It's a nice way to get out in the desert and do some wheeling while you're stuck at work.

Have you watched the build videos of it? You'll have to dig as it's probably a year or so back but definitely better than about anything else on TV. He's a big Corvair nut. They dont' show it often but he has a bunch of em.

Those Matt's recovery guys sure do seem to have fun!

I'm not really sure why that Sportsmobile was stuck. Perhaps the driver-front wheel was up in the air from the angle of the van tipping into the gully? (Assuming he has no front ARB air locker.) In any case, that's a perfect situation for a high lift jack and a wheel hook. Or even the stock jack on the rear axle by the wheel that's in the hole. Jack it up and add rocks.

I think it was a lot steeper than it looked. They kept talking about that. I've never once been able film a grade off road that looked anywhere near as steep as it was in real life.

Dude was 80 or something too, they said, and I bet he was afraid he was going to roll it if he moved another inch.

What I would love to know is the going rate for this type of extraction. They drove hours for that one each way, plus two men, truck and trailer.

Calling @Bettyford ! Clue us in, Ron?

It was a good recovery, but IMO they should have had another vehicle further up the hill (off the road, perpendicular to the van) providing some tangential tension via another winchline or recovery rope to minimize the chance of the van rolling over when being winched backwards. But if you're out there solo to recover a vehicle, you do what you gotta do.
