Strange modification sightings

I was driving eastbound on HWY 34 from Corvallis Oregon to I-5 yesterday when I saw a mechanical modification that blew me away. A full sized Blazer passed me and as I checked it out I noticed he didn't have a rear differential cover. I followed the rig for a while watching the diff gears just spinning around. Wonder how far it will run before things grind to a halt?

I was thinking this person is going to be real pissed at his mechanic for not putting the cover back on. Or real pissed at the person who stole his cover. Maybe he had some kind of fancy finned heat transfer type aluminum cover that someone else wanted.

Any one else have an odd mechanial modification sighting to report?

Re: Strange modification sightings

They do make clear Lexan Diff covers - did it have oil?

Re: Strange modification sightings

I guess it's possible there was a clear cover on it but I didn't see any oil.

Re: Strange modification sightings

Seen it a few times in Kentucky... why wasted diff fluid if the ring and pinion are shot already?

Re: Strange modification sightings

I assume everyone has seen someone who has blown a tire but for some reason chooses not to stop and now all the rubber is gone and it is rim and sparks against the pavement heading to who knows where. A very temporary modification.

Re: Strange modification sightings

I followed a guy that had smoking rear brake for several miles , I tried to wave him down as did several other people, he just waved us off. He finally stopped at a light were the rear seal finally melted away dumping the diff. oil on the drum then catching on fire. Needless to say the car burn to the ground in about 10 min. I think it was a mustang

Once the rig is moving, gear oil gets slung around into a this film everywhere, with little pooling up in the bottom. Plus, good synthetic is nearly clear.
