Suggestions for cheap/free camping - San Francisco Peninsula

My wife Sherri must go to UCSF Medical Center next month for surgery.

Can anyone suggest a free or low cost location to park the van within reasonable distance of SF? Something quiet and safe would be a bonus.

Sometimes hospitals have a place for RVs to park. Usually, no charge. Not sure if this would be exactly what you want but it would be close. The hospital I work at provides electric as well. Then others just park in the parking lot. Usually, just need to let security know that you are there for inpatients. -Woots Wife

Free - Low Cost - Parking - San Francisco ??? Oh boy thats a tough one. (Cost me $40 to park last week to see the Giants play.)

There is an RV park at Candlestick but I would expect its not cheap.

You can park during the day (not at night) in Golden Gate Park on the street. Its not too far from UCSF and finding a spot isn't too bad on a weekday. Just stay away from the museum area. Park along the Great Highway (Ocean) and take a cab to UCSF.

There is a KOA campground in Petaluma. It would take you about an hour to drive to UCSF from there.

I don't know the Peninsula very well. You might try Mike Ford_6L_E350

How long are you planning to be down here for?

Cheap to free in this area is non-existant. You can camp at some of the state beaches, but they are far from free. Big Basin and stuff in the Santa Cruz mountains are a long drive from San Fran.

Wal-Mart? Stealth camping in a hotel parking lot? The best bet would probably be in someone's driveway or backyard. Or, if you know someone who works nearby and can get you into a company parking lot.

Sorry,

Mike

Re: Suggestions for cheap/free camping - San Francisco Peninsula

Thanks for the ideas you guys. After posting the question, I found a few good sites about Stealth / Guerrilla Camping with more good ideas and tips.

The hospital will be the 1st try. We're going down this week in the car for a consultation and I can do some scouting. We're using the SMB later so that I'll have a cheap place to sleep for 3-5 nights and she will have a bed for the trip home rather than having to sit up for 6 Hrs.

We normally sleep in the penthouse. But when our daughter was in labor in a Kaiser Hospital in the San Jose area last year, we left the top down and slept down below in the hospital parking lot. No problems....we would have told a security person if we had seen one but didn't...

Dave - Thank you very much for the offer. I'll know more after I scout out the area this weekend. It's great to have a backup plan.
