There's stuck, and then there's REALLY stuck...A sinkhole to hell

This video is a little lengthy so I fast forwarded to the actual recovery portion...

Kinda surprised it came out as easily as it did. Also kinda surprised the recovery guy would risk getting under the vehicle like he did. It sure seems as if things could have very easily and very quickly, gone very badly.

I'm fairly new to all this, and haven't been out a whole lot yet, so sink holes in anything other than pavement with usually a water main break or some kind of flooding is something I've never heard of and certainly never experienced. I know it may be area dependent, but how common is something like this in the off-road/overland world? From the video, it seems like the guy didn't know until it was too late. Having an 11,000+ pound vehicle makes something like this even more scary

Have to laugh, I had the same concern about 25 years ago while running my Brother in-laws blazer through the backroads around Verdi, CA
Spent two days bombing around, and he joined us on the third day. About 3hrs into our tour he stopped just after crossing a small stream to let the Dog out (180lb Newfoundland). Dog loves water, so my brother in-law grabbed a stick and called us over to a small pool of water (there were about three of these near the stream and about 10ft apart from one another - each pool only measured about 5ft in diameter)
Brother in-law called the dog and threw the stick in one of the small pools, Dog jumped in after it and literally DISAPPEARED... came back to the surface about 5 or 6 seconds later. Talk about being amazed! That was a really deep hole to be capable of swallowing such a large dog - at the time I would have guessed these pools may be 6-10" deep - a wake up call on potential hazards lurking in places you'd never expect.
Became a little more cautious, mainly when in an unfamiliar environment.

Beware!!! Watching Matt's recovery videos will cause you to lose large amounts of time. They are all, or mostly all, worth it. Probably some of the best entertainment out there. No bling, no silly music, just a good people doing a fun job. I would consider it an honor to bury something in SW Utah so bad that I needed to call Winder's Towing.

I got stuck in an FJ40 back in the 70s. I thought it was a small water hole like Twoxentrix mentioned, but it was deep enough to swallow the FJ40. No one had winches back then. Tow truck called... Learned my lesson right there about checking water depth.

I haven't used or needed it yet, but I bought one of these used for $15 and keep it in the van for snow/mud/water crossings. It's an avalanche pole. It's very light weight & fits into a small bag.

Another sink hole

During one of my first trips in the van, I ended up with only two wheels on the ground. Mrs A/T claims I drove off the road, but I maintain that the road collapsed under me. She got out without really looking and pretty much disappeared from sight due the depth of the hole we were in. We were miles from civilization down a narrow dirt road, so rescue was unlikely. Fortunately I had some recovery gear and was able to use the winch in front, along with a come along on the back to prevent roll over, and pull her out. Failing that, the plan was to make the long hike back to the road, and wave $20 bills at every 4wd that drove by. After that, I upped my recovery gear a bunch............

There Jeff, I fixed your post. I am glad you were able to rescue Mrs A/T

Now I like that idea -
Because its so convenient, I've just used the pole from my Fimma awning crank...anything above 1/2 of that I detour (only used it as such a couple times since my age has rendered me more cautious)
