I agree that the cosmetic part is a big part of it, but my experience in adding some lift to my stock height GM Quigley is that the ride was improved. After lift the the CV axles in the front ended up almost perfectly horizontal and it gave some room off the bump stops. Before, I actually had a situation where the front cv shafts where pointed up and there wasn't enough room to travel down.
I would also suggest SUMO/SUPER spring bump stops for the front in place of the factory units. A cheap and easy way to add a little dampening after you lift. The bump stops are actually a fairly important part of the suspension on these. And again, spend a little to get the custom tuned fox shocks. I'm very happy with how mine rides even as a daily on pavement driver not to mention forest roads, washboard, to semi aggressive articulated scenarios.
