Too Rusty????

Looking for a little opinion and help. Saw the rust during our Death Valley trip this past week. I don't pretend to be a big car buff but sure seems to be quite rusty. This is on a new van with less than 3K miles. Not sure if this is a Ford thing or something added during the Quadvan conversion. Any help and feedback will be great. Thank you.

Re: Too Rusty????

Looks normal enough. Just a little surface rust on bare metal.

If it bothers you there are several products that can coat rusty metal and stop or retard growth of rust. Rustoleum, POR-15 and many others.

Re: Too Rusty????

yup, or just let it be and it'll get a bit of patina... not such a hot orange.

when looking a veeks, I'd rather see "reality rust" than a heavy dose of undercarriage coating, particularly on older ones... kinda goes fer th' ladies too

Re: Too Rusty????

I don't know, on an almost-new van that sure would give me pause. Looks like they forgot to powdercoat the pieces or something, especially when comparing the rusty parts against the similar nearby parts.

Re: Too Rusty????

I think what you are seeing is re-used factory parts vs. newly fabricated parts.

Re: Too Rusty????

You'd have to do some major work to get that off, clean it, and powder coat it or whatever.

Mike's right; probably just different part source. I'd say most of the undercarriage of my 2001 is rusted stuff. I'd just ignore it. Some rigorous offroad use and that whole area is gonna be thrashed eventually anyway.

Big hunks o' metal like that aren't gonna rust through. Where you might worry is if there's a fastener or something that shows a disproportionate amount of rust, or where some parts might rust themselves together and be difficult to remove or break. Covering rust is a very bad no no; it makes it much worse since moisture can get trapped there. Aside from inhibitors, there are things that can actually bond to the rust and severely retard it; Monstaliner, for example makes a polyurethane that sticks to it like, well, glue. What sets the stuff is actually water vapor, so it really likes rust.

But again, I wouldn't bother. Odds are the rest of the van will fall apart before that rust can eat into any of those parts and do damage.

Re: Too Rusty????

Those parts were added during the conversion, should have been painted. If you go look under a brand new van at Ford you'll see similar rust on the steering box, knuckles, etc. Hit it with some sand paper or scotch brite and spray it black. Nothing to worry about.
