What would you put in a survival kit?

I think backpacking got me started on this, but I've thought a lot about survival kits, particularly lately. Earthquakes, hurricanes, 2012, zombies... you never know when you need to be ready. So having a survival kit around the house is pretty smart, but what do you put in it?

So... I'm thinking the first question is size. There's a really neat kit in a sardine can. That's a bit smaller than I'm thinking.

So here are the restrictions. First, it needs to be adequate to survive on for a month. Second, one person should be able to move it. To be generous, we'll say "move it" means from the floor of the garage to the back of the pickup for your mad get away. So maybe two big duffel bags at most.

Ideas:
- Water purification, either a filter or iodine drops. I'd prefer a filter. Collapsible water bottles.
- Multitool like a leatherman.
- Some form of compact high calorie food with a long shelf life. MREs?
- Fire starting equipment. Waterproof matches, some tiny starter logs, maybe a small can of fluid?
- Rope, tarps, maybe a compact tent, metal stakes
- Collapsible fishing pole.
- Collapsible small animal trap (I've never actually seen one)
- Reliable hunting/survival type knife.
- First aid kit.
- Basic clothing layers (a fleece, windbreaker, gloves, hat, socks)

Anything else?

Extra credit points if its an item that should ALSO be in your SMB, like the first aid kit.

What pilsner and bluedog said , and the ten essentials:

Map
Compass (optionally supplemented with a GPS receiver)
Sunglasses and sunscreen
Extra food and water
Extra clothes
Headlamp (outdoor)/flashlight
First aid kit
Fire starter
Matches
Knife

and a bunch of other stuff. There is a post around here somewhere under bug-out bags or something...

There's at least one fairly detailed thread here on Bug Out Bags. That's probably a good start.

Re: What would you put in a survival kit?

The bug out bag thread is cool but I have always figured a small pack would be of use if I had to abandon my van and walk out. So the way I see it is the BOB would be a small part of the escape pack which could be part van contents. The SMB would be the last part of the equation as the survival unit or BOV. So the bug out bag would have a knife, the pack would have the Glock and the van would have the SKS. Bare minimum items in the bug out bag to survive, then step up to the pack with things like a small tent, stove like a pocket rocket, and ending with a pop top camper that has the cold beer. If you're worried about 2012 you do like I do and that's to keep a large duffle BOB by the door ready to go...that's Bag Of Beer .
