Low profile roof rack!

After looking for a low profile roof rack that would fit in front of my penthouse top for years I finally gave in and made one myself. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out 🙂

I like it. What do you plan to carry up there? Firewood?

I have a GTRV pop top & am noodling with a few ideas on adding a simple roof rack/basket in that area. Main purpose would be to carry firewood and/or extra water when boondocking.

Yours is way cleaner than mine! I used the basket from a hitch carrier and some gutter mounts made for a Jeep. I put firewood and my leveling ramps up there.

I thought it odd the feather duster wasn't removed prior to taking the pic.

My main motivation was a more solid place to anchor the front of an awning I’m installing. Besides that and the camp lights already on it, I’m planning to mount antennas, and probably my traction boards? I have a tray on my back bumper that’s great for hauling firewood.

A long time ago

In 1973 I made a front rack for my 1969 SMB penthouse. I then put stuff in a big waterproof bag and lashed it in my rack. I drove from northern Indiana to the state of Washington and back. It worked fine but ugly. Yours looks a lot better than mine. Two SMBs later I have a high roof model.

Looks great! Are you taking orders?

I want a rack to mount lights and to put pelican cases within reach of the front window when the penthouse top is up on my RB50 with zip down screens. If I can find a rack with the right gutter to gutter dimension that would be a good starting point otherwise have to start from scratch. Not sure if I want a fairing to eliminate drag or cantilever over winshield. Not much room to work with on an RB.
